The Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Amanda Dale as its new Director.
FAFIA is an alliance of equality-seeking organizations committed to making international agreements on women’s human rights a reality in women’s everyday lives in Canada.
Best known for her tenure as the Executive Director of the Barbra Schlifer Clinic, Amanda Dale is an international human rights scholar, with a specialization in women’s human rights. She is a recognized spokesperson and expert in women’s rights and violence against women. Amanda has over 30 years’ experience working in international, multicultural, urban, and remote contexts.
Dr. Dale will start her work as Director with FAFIA full-time in May.
“We are thrilled to announce Amanda’s new role with us. Her addition to our organization marks a revitalization of FAFIA’s capacity to support women’s rights organizations wishing to make use of the obligations Canada has under international law to advocate for women’s human rights,” said Co-Chair, Professor Angela Cameron.
“We are entering a crucial time in the rights of Indigenous women and Canada’s obligations to live up to its international agreements”, says FAFIA’s Human Rights Committee Chair, Shelagh Day.
FAFIA has devoted over a decade of work to addressing the human rights crisis of murders and disappearances of Indigenous women and girls.
“Amanda is a perfect fit for our network”, adds Professor Cameron. “She combines international human rights law expertise with her leadership in domestic law reform and policy work for the rights of women. She is a Woman of Distinction for Social Justice, a published author, and is currently completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship on the links between Canada’s international obligations and equality struggles in Canada.”
“FAFIA has been a strong advocate for Canada’s adherence to women’s international human rights standards right here at home”, says Amanda. “I am proud and humbled to be asked to join them in this new role, and look forward to working with women’s groups across the country to ensure we live up to those obligations.”
