Impact of COVID-19: Canada’s Continuing Violations of the Human Rights of Indigenous Women and Girls

For immediate release

(Toronto, June 25, 2020) – Canada has consistently failed to remedy the violations of the human rights of Indigenous women and girls and their communities, which the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls found to be genocide. This context of unabated racialized and sexualized violence is exacerbated by COVID-19, and forces Indigenous women and girls into precarious situations, increasing their risk of infection and death from the virus and their vulnerability to violence.

Dr. Pamela Palmater, Chair in Indigenous Governance at Ryerson University and the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) have made submissions to the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Jose Francisco Cali Tzay, outlining the key impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

Date: Thursday, June 25, 2020

Time: 8:00 AM EST

Access to Submissions: Please read the submission to the Special Rapporteur on Dr. Pamela Palmater’s website and FAFIA’s website.
